Thomas Hayden Berry, Sr.

Thomas Hayden Berry, Sr., of Vermont, passed away on September 19, 2026, at the University of Vermont Medical Center after a period of declining health. He was 82. Born on January 22, 1944, in Burlington, Vermont, Thomas lived a life marked by warmth, companionship, and the simple joys that brought people together.

Thomas had a deep love of music that remained with him throughout his life. He played guitar and banjo, and later in life he took up the fiddle, embracing it with the same spirit that shaped so much of who he was. He became a part of the Northeast Fiddlers' Association, finding connection and enjoyment through the music he loved.

He was known as a very social man who also treasured home life. For more than ten years, Hayden Berry Commons was home, and there he was especially well known for his friendly nature and outgoing spirit. In December, he delighted in wearing his Santa hat on his walks, a tradition that brought smiles to others and even inspired newspaper articles. That playful and cheerful custom reflected the kind of presence he was in the lives of those around him—familiar, kindhearted, and memorable.

Thomas is survived by his loving family, who will carry his memory forward with affection and gratitude. He leaves his daughter, Sarah Watson, and her husband, Victor; his son, Thomas H. Berry, Jr., and his wife, Miriam; his grandchildren, Nichola, Amanda, Molly, Elisha, and Christina; ten great-grandchildren; and his niece, Billi Violette. The love of family remained an important part of his life, and his presence will be deeply missed by each of them.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Judith Berry; his mother, Norma Berry; his father, Billy Berry; and his sister, Lee Violette. Their memories remained a part of his life, and now he is reunited with those who went before him.

Family and friends are invited to attend visitation on Thursday, September 24, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Minor Funeral and Cremation Center, 237 Route US-7, PO Box 113, Milton, Vermont 05468. A burial service will take place in Milton Village next to his late wife privately. 

Thomas will be remembered for his music, his sociable spirit, his love of home, and the happiness he brought to everyday moments. His life touched many, and his memory will continue to bring comfort and smiles to those who knew and loved him.
