Sandra “Sandy” Grant, 76, of Burlington, Vermont, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on October 6, 1948, to Ruth and Eldon Barrows, Sandy grew up in Milton, Vermont. She often reminisced about her childhood on her Uncle Bob’s farm, where she developed a love for animals, hard work, and a bit of mischief with her cousins. These early years shaped her appreciation for the simple joys in life.
A graduate of Milton High School, Sandy went on to study nursing at the Fanny Allen School of Nursing, becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse. She dedicated many years of service to Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital (NVRH) in St. Johnsbury, working across various departments and shifts. Known for her compassion and tireless dedication, Sandy made a lasting impact on countless patients and colleagues.
While caring for others professionally, Sandy also helped to raise three sons in the countryside of Lyndonville, Vermont. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, and her happiest moments were those spent with family and in nature.
Sandy cherished the quiet beauty of the outdoors. She found peace at her beloved cabin in the woods of Newark, Vermont, where she took pride in her home and flower gardens, loved the solitude of the wilderness, and cherished the changing seasons. She was fiercely independent and remained in her home for as long as she could, meeting life's changes and challenges with resilience and grit.
Her many passions included knitting, sewing, crafting, and reading. A frequent visitor to the public library, Sandy passed on her love of reading to her children, often returning home from family trips together with stacks of books. She also enjoyed yard sales, thrift shopping, country walks, puzzles, campfires, BBQs, and fishing—once proudly landing a 20-inch brook trout from Center Pond on a bright spring day.
Sandy had a great sense of humor and enjoyed a good laugh. Even in the last few difficult months of her life, she would chuckle at the stories of those who visited, give frequent smiles to the nurses and doctors, and was playful with her siblings. Her spirit and sense of humor remained strong until the end.
She is survived by her three sons: Casey Grant and his wife Penny of Hinesburg, VT; Chris Grant of Miami, FL; and Jeremy Grant of Richmond, VT. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Jayden Grant of Essex, VT, and Julia Grant of Charlotte, NC; her sisters Kay Walker and husband Bob of Milton, VT, and Fay Richards and husband Gary; and her brothers Randy Barrows and wife Diane, and Dwight Barrows and wife Carol, along with their families.
Sandy was predeceased by her parents, Ruth and Eldon Barrows.
A private family gathering will be held to celebrate Sandy’s life and honor her memory.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Sandy’s name may be made to the American Stroke Association.
