South Hero

South Hero -- Robert Alexander Straight Sr. of South Hero, a devoted husband and son and beloved father passed away on September 19, 2023, at the age of 72. Born in Providence, Rhode Island on January 8, 1951, the son of Robert E. Straight and Genevieve [Makowski] Straight. Robert was the epitome of resilience, resourcefulness, and love.

Robert was married to the love of his life, Sue [Gardner] Straight, for an extraordinary 52 years. Their journey together was marked by countless cherished memories, from camping trips throughout New England, where Robert taught his children the joys of the great outdoors, to joyful celebrations and everyday moments of laughter and love.

Robert earned a reputation as a "Macgyver" among his family, since he was able to fix almost anything. As a pipefitter for UA Local 693, he was well respected by his fellow journeymen, and he took great pride in his work. His hard work ethic and determination led to a successful career.

Robert, along with his wife, ensured his four children were able to experience a wide variety of opportunities, including participation in every sport you can imagine. He was eager to drive them to their many activities and cheer from the sidelines. He particularly enjoyed introducing his children to skiing, and the wintertime tradition has been passed onto his grandchildren.

Robert found solace and peace in nature. He enjoyed farming and taking care of animals on his hobby farm. He also had a passion for deer hunting. Robert had many great qualities, including a wonderful sense of humor, but most of all, he enjoyed helping people. He was a caretaker for his elderly mother and brother, and he was always ready to help anyone who needed it, including opening his home to others, without asking for anything in return.

Engaging with his community was another important aspect of Robert's life. He loved growing up in South Hero and being a part of the town throughout his life. He shared many values with community members and forged lifelong friendships.

Robert is survived by wife, Sue Straight of South Hero, children, Robert (Faye) Straight, Jr. of Grand Isle, Genevieve (Eric) Fullilove of Scarborough, ME, Erica (Masaru) Furukawa of Madison, WI, Keith Straight of South Hero, three brothers, grandchildren, Alyssa, Noah, Madison, Leila, Kira, Alexander, Seiji, Hana, and great-granddaughter, Esme. He is also survived by his loyal schnoodle, Buster, and miniature dachshund, Daisy.

He is predeceased by his parents, Robert E. Straight and Genevieve Straight, his brother Rodney Straight and in-laws Edward and Una Gardner.

We would like to thank special friends, Jessup, Eric, Hunter, Trevor and Monica and doctors and nurses of UVM Medical Center.
