Robert Larmay

October 25, 1944 — July 23, 2023

Robert Edward Larmay, age 78, passed away on July 23, 2023, at the White River Junction Veterans Hospital, after a short battle with cancer. He was born on October 25, 1944, in Burlington, Vermont, to the late Raymond and Doris Larmay.

Robert earned the respected rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America at the young age of 14. After graduating from Burlington High School, he entered the Army where he served for over three years. Robert was a combat veteran, as was his father, Raymond, who served in the Navy.  After earning his Parachute Badge, he was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division.  He then served in OPERATION POWER PACK where he earned an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, a Combat Infantryman’s Badge and the National Defense Service Medal. Robert was honorably discharged in October of 1966 at the rank of Private First Class, Non-Commissioned Officer Prep Course completed.

After the Army, Robert developed a passion for martial arts that lasted his entire life, eventually earning his black belt. He also loved numismatics where his dedication and expertise in the field of coin collecting earned him the respect and admiration of fellow collectors and enthusiasts. He was a member of the American Numismatic Association. Robert also started his own custom clothing business selling T-shirts and jackets with customized artwork.

However, those who knew Robert knew his heart belonged to helping Veterans.  Robert will be deeply remembered by Vermont veterans as he was passionate about helping fellow vets overcome the aftereffects of their service. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans (DAV), American Veterans (AMVETS) and a Life Member of the American Legion. During his five years with DAV, he was very active with Chapter 5 out of Colchester, even serving as Adjutant.  He also served as a certified Veteran Service Officer and was active at DAV conventions as well as with fundraising activities.  He was a member in good standing with AMVETS. Robert served as a member of the American Legion Post 91 out of Colchester. During his three years as a Veteran Service Officer, Robert was directly responsible for helping countless veterans get the benefits they deserved. As Logistics Officer, he personally handled getting wheelchairs and other items to disabled Veterans. He also took pride in organizing the proper disposal of our Nation’s flag. He performed this duty with the honor it deserves.

While Robert never minced words and was always straightforward, he possessed an endearing sense of humor and a generous spirit. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His generosity left a lasting impact on all fortunate enough to know him.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Doris Larmay and his beloved companion of over 30 years, Marlene Gallien.
