Kyle Toof passed away at home on October 22, 2026, at the age of 64 after enduring three years of ALS. He was born on September 27, 1962, in Burlington Vermont. He will be remembered as a man whose warmth, humor, and weather predictions of bad storms left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Kyle was very funny and friendly, the kind of person who always had a story to share and who made time spent together feel easy and memorable. He deeply enjoyed being with friends and family, and those moments of connection were at the heart of his life. Whether in conversation, at a gathering, or simply sharing a laugh, he brought a steady sense of joy to those around him. He was especially at home outdoors, and found happiness in the simple pleasure of appreciating nature.
Kyle grew up in Essex Junction, Vermont. He often reminisced about his youth and his group of friends. Kyle always had a story about his escapades with friends; whether it was about a pick-up game of football or street hockey, fishing on Willoughby River in the spring or Lake Champlain year round, and hunting in Waterbury, Vermont. He was the “king” of foosball and ping pong.
Kyle graduated from Essex Junction High School in 1980. He spent the majority of his career as a supervisor in transportation including public transportation, school transportation, and trucking. He ended his career as the bussing supervisor for the Burlington School System.
In 1990, Kyle married Laurie Stanley and together they raised their two children, Connor and Adrienne in Fletcher, Vermont. Their family included numerous dogs and cats which Kyle cherished. He shared his love of the outdoors with his children, his greatest love and the pride of his life, and he never hesitated to tell people about them and their accomplishments. Kyle enjoyed fishing on Lake Champlain, golfing on a sunny day, hunting in the fall in Fletcher and in Maine, and working outside at his home. During the last few years, he found peace sitting in the sun on the porch surveying his property and supervising the yard work being done by his wife and children.
Above all, Kyle will be missed by his family, who were central to his life. He is survived by his wife, Laurie; his son, Connor and wife Mattie and their daughter Adeline; his daughter, Adrienne, and her partner, Michelle; his brothers, Shawn Toof, and his children Hannah and Noah; and Kevin Toof and his wife Tracee; his second families, the Stanley clan and the Smiths. Each of them carries forward cherished memories of his laughter, his stories, and the comfort of his presence.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Sybil Toof.
Kyle’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him, and in the many stories that will continue to be told with smiles, laughter, and affection.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a favorite charity of your choice. We would like to thank the University of Vermont ALS clinic for their care and support.
