John L. Thompson 67, of Milton VT passed away on May 6, 2026, after a long illness. He was a beloved brother, nephew, uncle, cousin and friend who will be dearly missed.
John was born in Burlington on February 23,1959 and graduated from BHS in 1978. He joined the National Guard after graduation and began working in the food industry.
He moved to Virginia Beach in 1985 to live with his sister Cyndi's family, where he continued to work in food service and began coaching in local youth baseball.
John lived in the Shenandoah Valley for a few years where he hiked, camped and biked to his heart's content.
He returned to Vermont in 1998 where his love of cooking became a hobby he was happy to share with family and friends. He loved making pies and cookies. His pulled pork was a favorite among those he shared with.
He was an avid fisherman and hunter, who enjoyed golf and continued to do those activities until he was no longer able to.
He was an accomplished photographer and many of his photographs can be seen in businesses and professional offices throughout Milton.
John was a positive, resilient person in spite of all his hardships. He was a contradiction in many ways. Blunt, to the point of insulting, apologetic, sensitive and sincere.
He was exactly the type of guy that would give you the shirt off his back and then tell you the color didn't suit you.
He had the biggest heart and was capable of the greatest understanding.
He leaves behind an Uncle, Denis Lambert of Stowe, Aunts Barbara Lambert of Colchester and Mary Ann Thompson of Burlington, along with sisters Susan Sanders (Jerry) and her children; Patrick (Gail), Heather (Paul), Jerome, Peter and their families. Cynthia Reitz and children; Joshua (Jenny), Benjamin (Jodie), Samantha and their families. Kimberly Taber (Michael) and her family Marcus, Robert and Thomas (Justin), Stephanie Thompson (Matt Cohen) and her family. Adam (Kristina) Bosworth, Laura Treichler (John), Phil Cohen and Hannah Kelley (Evan) and their families.
He also leaves many grand and great nephews and nieces, cousins and his dearest friend David Conley and his beloved golden Charlie.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and support personnel that enabled John to live with his health issues, with a special thank you to visiting nurses Amy Jackson and Patty Defayette.
