John Thomas Geary, 88, of Parrish FL and Milton VT, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2026 surrounded by his children.
John was born in Bronx, NY on October 19, 1937 to Veronica and James Geary, and was predeceased by all four of his sisters and a brother. John was also predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy, in 1977, and most recently, his wife of 46 years, Gloria, in 2025.
John is survived by his children – Joann Geary, John Geary and wife Tammy, Judith Preiss and husband Kurt. John’s family grew when he gained three more daughters – Sheryl Prince and husband Ron, Brenda More Gibson and husband Tom, and Karen Stoodley and husband Larry.
John deeply loved his family and took great pride in also being a grandfather to Melissa Cushing, Stephanie Gaudio, Rebecca Upsall, Bryan Geary, Kaitlin Geary, Nicholas Preiss, Emma Preiss, Jennifer Prince and Paul Prince, and great-grandfather to Nathan Pepin, Charlotte and Kennedy Upsall, Paxton, Maeve and Reese Geary, Elena and Rowan Preiss and Ryan and Kennedy Hughes.
John attended parochial school at St. Peter’s and Paul’s and graduated from Samuel Gompers Industrial High School in the Bronx. John began his working career servicing typewriters with his father throughout New York City (meeting the occasional celebrity). He then began a 30 year career with New York Telephone, servicing telephones throughout New York City. He transferred to Vermont in 1970. While working at the phone company, John also dabbled in real estate and even opened his own real estate business, Geary Real Estate. He retired from New England Telephone Company as the last Vermont testman. After retiring, John became an insurance agent for the Knights of Columbus until moving to Florida. In Florida, he became fully involved with the Lions Club, rising to Governor of Lion’s District 35-1, eventually representing the group in Japan. John’s many civic-minded and church activities set an example for all to follow.
In lieu of flowers, perhaps consider a donation to a local Lions Club or a favorite charity in John’s name.
