James Anthony Pebler, a beloved father, brother, and friend, peacefully passed away on February 5, 2026, at his home in Milton, Vermont, following a brief illness. Born on December 26, 1965, in Albany, New York, James lived a vibrant life filled with kindness, joy, and an unwavering spirit.
A proud graduate of Burlington High School in 1984, James embodied a work ethic that saw him through diverse careers. He started as an employee at Al's French Fry's, ventured into landscaping, and dedicated many years as a custodian in schools throughout Chittenden County. For the last decade of his life, he worked as a roofer, taking pride in the craftsmanship of his work while earning the respect of his colleagues and his community.
James was known for his infectious personality; he never met a stranger. His warmth and generosity knew no bounds—he had a unique ability to touch the hearts of those around him and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Known for his no-filter approach, he spoke his mind freely, which only endeared him further to his family and friends.
Among his many cherished memories were the joyful times spent on cruises, where he could be found dancing unabashedly with two glasses in hand, reveling in the beauty of life. Sundays were reserved for leisurely drives on his beloved Can Am Spyder, an activity he relished. James also enjoyed the thrill of the casino and found pleasure in dining out at various restaurants. His creative spirit extended into woodworking, where he skillfully crafted the furniture that adorned his home—each piece a testament to his love for artistry and craftsmanship.
James's pride was palpable when reflecting on his life, particularly regarding his divorce, which he considered a chance for a second life. It symbolized newfound freedom, and he approached it with immense gratitude, viewing it as one of his proudest accomplishments.
He is survived by his daughter, Grace Hepburn, and her husband, Samuel; siblings Keith Pebler, Emma "Kathy" Jarvis, and William Pebler, alongside his sister-in-law Cindy. He was also a devoted grandfather to his two grandchildren, Coby and Shawn Nevills, and will be deeply missed by his many nieces and nephews.
James was predeceased by his parents, Caroline and James Henry Pebler, and his beloved dog, Cinnamon. As we remember James, let us carry forward the lessons of kindness, generosity, and exuberance for life that he so freely shared with everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His spirit will forever echo in our hearts.
A burial service will take place in the spring in Mount Calvary Cemetery in the spring.
