James Leonard Morrill, Sr.

May 21, 1943 — April 10, 2022

Colchester, VT James "Jim" Leonard Morrill, Sr. passed away peacefully at home on April 10, 2022 with his loving family by his side. Jim was born in Winooski, VT at the Fanny Allen Hospital on May 21, 1943 to Leo and Jeannette (Dorey) Morrill. Jim grew up in Winooski except for a few years in Utah before he joined the U.S. Navy in 1960. Jim was always especially proud of serving on the crew on the maiden voyage of the USS Kitty Hawk for four years before returning to his family home in Colchester, VT. After Jim returned from the Navy, at his stepfather's urging, Jim met Elma at her father's grocery store in 1964. Dan was right, it was love at first sight, and they were married six months later, on June 12, 1965. Jim worked for Lacey's Carpet Gallery for many years, first as a carpet installer, and then cleaning carpets. In 1983 Jim and Elma opened Bayside Bakery where Jim was always the smiling face at the grill or laughing at the counter enjoying the friendships of many loyal customers who became family and friends. Jim and Elma worked side by side for 32 years until they retired in 2016. After Jim retired he and Elma could still be found together working at the farmstand where many former bakery customers were pleasantly surprised to see them. Jim loved his family, he set the gold standard for a husband and father. Our hearts are broken, the void Jim leaves cannot be filled. The memories we have are filled with much love and happy times. Jim was predeceased by his parents Leo and Jeannette (Dorey) Morrill, his stepfather Danny Mosley, father-in-law and mother-in-law Sam and Doris (Myott) Mazza, two brothers Larry Morrill, Jack Morrill, sister Annette Sathoff, and sisters-in-law Annette Mazza and Jeanne Mazza. Jim leaves behind the love of his life, his wife of 56 years Elma (Mazza) Morrill, his daughter Stacey Rivard and her husband James, his son James "Jim" Morrill, Jr. and his love Joanna, his very special niece Shelly (Leo) Broderick and her husband Denis, two granddaughters Alyssa and Rachael, three bonus grandchildren Andrew, Emma, and Cora. Jim also leaves his brother Art "Butch" Morrill and his wife Janet, brother-in-law Sam Mazza and his wife Jeannie, sister-in-law Carolyn (Mazza) Leo and her husband John and many more nieces, nephews, family, and friends. Jim enjoyed spending time with family and friends, but he never wanted to be the center of attention. To honor his wishes, there will be no calling hours or services. Jim's family would like to thank Dr. Benjamin Clements and Dr. Joanne Hunt of Colchester Family Practice. We would also like to thank the special nurses at UVM Home Health and Hospice. We are extremely grateful for the caring & support that these special people gave Jim and our family. Donation in Jim's memory can be made to UVM Home Health & Hospice.
