Eleanor K. Brodeur, 79, of Vermont, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2025. Born on June 8, 1946, in Rockford, Illinois, she was the only child of Charles Spencer and Eleanor K. Kling. She was raised in Rockford, where she was an active member of Court Street United Methodist Church and graduated from West High School in 1964. Eleanor attended college for three years, studying history—a lifelong passion.
In 1969, she relocated to Vermont, becoming what she fondly called a "refugee to Vermont." She worked for New England Telephone Company (Ma Bell) for 13 years, holding positions in billing and dispatch.
On May 10, 1975, she married Robert R. Brodeur. Together they raised two children: Catherine M. Brodeur-Johnson (Erik) and James R. Brodeur.
Her deep love of history and genealogy led her to join the Captain Jedediah Hyde Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) in 1989. She served as Chapter Regent and held numerous chapter offices. Eleanor also served the Vermont State Society in various state officer roles and committee chairs, and she was a Senior National Officer of the Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.).
Her interest in history expanded into the world of antiques. Starting with depression glass, she soon discovered a deep fascination with postcards—particularly Vermont real photo postcards—which inspired her to author a book about the photographers behind them.
Eleanor was also well known for her Christmas baking, especially her cherished Santa Claus cookies made with a cookie cutter lovingly passed down from her grandmother.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Eleanor’s memory may be made to the Vermont State Society Daughters of the American Revolution for the benefit of the John Strong Mansion Museum. Contributions can be mailed to: VSSDAR, c/o Cyndy Coy, Vermont State Treasurer, NSDAR, PO Box 2104, South Burlington, VT 05407.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at Minor Funeral Home from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date.
