Milton

Elaine P. Mayville, 101, of Milton, Vermont, passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Pillsbury/Homestead community in St. Albans, Vermont on Thursday, May 9th, 2024.

Elaine was born March 16, 1923 in Randolph, VT, daughter of the late Raymond L. and Margaret (Taft) Preston.  She graduated from Randolph High School in 1940 and the former Burlington Business College, now known as Champlain College.  She worked as an office manager at the New England Fire Insurance Rating Association company in Burlington for five years prior to marrying C. Edward Mayville, Jr. on August 21, 1945, who predeceased her in 2010.

Elaine was a member of Enterprise 4-H Club in North Randolph and later joined the Rebekah Lodge #60 in Burlington, Vermont.

She and Ed owned and operated a small dairy farm in Milton, VT which included a small apple orchard and a sugar bush from which they made maple syrup every spring until they retired from farming.  For a number of years they hosted summer farm vacations to families from several New England cities.  They built a camp on Lake Champlain in 1960 where they loved to entertain friends and family.   They traveled to Europe three times, visited Hawaii, and enjoyed extensive travel in Canada and throughout the U.S.  They owned a camper and for several summer seasons joined family at the Barber Campground in Westport, New York for fun and camaraderie.

Elaine and her husband were also avid snowmobilers, enjoying outings with friends and family.  They were members of the Milton Grange, the Milton Seniors and the Milton Historical Society. In the early years, they enjoyed dancing but Elaine’s favorite past time was playing cards and socializing with friends and family.  She was a champion Scrabble player right up until her passing.

Elaine is survived by her three children, Gail M. Buss and her husband Greg of Freeport, FL, Gregory A. Mayville of West Burke, and Sheryl Mayville of Burlington as well as several grandchildren, Kati Moran, Matthew Moran, Jennifer Lund, Jesse, Jason and Casey Mayville, Robert Buss, Mary Pat Buss, John and Jason George, and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Russell R. Preston, Sr. and by her daughter-in-law Mary Lawrence Mayville and her nephew, Russell Preston, Jr.

The family wishes to thank the entire staff of Homestead at Pillsbury in St. Albans  for the ten years of true love and care they provided and the Bayada nursing staff for their love and compassion in hospice.
