Charles E. (Charlie) Stewart, passed away early morning of November 28, 2023, peacefully in his home with loved ones by his side at the age of 95. Or as he said, 100-5!
Was born on August 18, 1928, eldest son of John E. and Lucy (Savage) Stewart. Charles was raised on his folk’s farm on Barstow Rd, Shelburne, VT. This farm was previously owned by John L. Barstow, 39th Governor of Vermont (1882-1884) He walked to grade school (one room schoolhouse) about a mile, uphill both ways. Attended Shelburne High School four miles from home. He rode a bicycle on good days and rode a horse during the winter which was stabled in a nearby barn. He graduated in 1945 as a salutatorian.
He attended the University of Vermont for four years majoring in Agriculture and Engineering. He served two years during the Korean War in the USA 11th Airborne division stationed in Fort Campbell, KY. Went to school at Ft. Benning, GA and was pushed out of a plane 14 times! After discharge, he joined the US Army Reserve. This is how he honed his skills and developed a strong foundation for his future endeavors.
Charles began working at General Electric after completing his education and service. His exceptional skills and meticulous approach to his work made him an invaluable asset to the company. He dedicated many years to his profession, leaving a lasting impact on those around him.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Charles had a vibrant personality and a great sense of humor. He had a knack for spreading laughter wherever he went and could effortlessly lighten the mood in any situation. His smirky grin and quick wit brought joy to countless lives.
Charles had many hobbies and interests that brought him happiness throughout his life. Among them, a love for horseshoes and bowling, which allowed him to engage in friendly competition with friends and family. Charles took immense pride in maintaining his garden and farm year after year at his homestead in Grand Isle, VT since 1970. He was known to fly his paraplane across the Champlain Islands with a black and yellow striped parachute which earned the name "Bumblebee." Years later he was known in Grand Isle County for his Emus who would periodically escape their pen.
Charles leaves behind a legacy of love and fond memories. He is survived by his beloved dog Toodie, his younger sister Janice (Stewart) Raymond, his two daughters: Kaydell Davis, and Michelle St. Louis. He was a devoted Grandfather to Erica Seymour and her husband Terry, Evan Davis and his wife Christina, Jessica Tandy and her husband Bryan, Timothy St. Louis and his wife Steph Sarkisian, Matthew Stewart, and Gregory Stewart. The joy Charles experienced in life multiplied when he became a great-grandfather to Kayla Brown, Savannah Brown, Everett Tandy, Harrison Tandy, Tre Brunelle, Mason Davis, Benny Davis and a great-great-granddaughter Emerie Brown.
Charles is predeceased by his wife Lou Ann (Dubuque) Stewart with whom he shared an incredible bond. They stood by each other’s side through thick and thin until 1993. As well he was a proud father of his son David L. Stewart and enjoyed the time they spent together until 2012. His brothers, James and Conrad Stewart, were also important figures in his life. He cherished memories of each of them after their passing.
In recognition of Charles E. Stewart's life well-lived and the impact he had on those around him, visitation services will be held on December 8th, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Minor Funeral and Cremation Center located at 237 Route US-7 in Milton, VT. A burial service will take place on December 9th at Grand Isle Cemetery in Grand Isle at 10:00 AM.
Charles's strong spirit will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he may no longer be physically present with us, his soul can rest in eternal peace as we continue to honor his life through the memories and humor, he instilled in us.
