Milton

Charles Edmund Hurley passed away peacefully at home on May 5, 2026. Born on October 2, 1942, in Rutland, Vermont, Charlie (also called Chuck) lived a life defined by hard work, dedication to his family, and service to his community.

Charlie proudly served in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1963. After returning home, he built a long career in the electrical field, including nearly 30 years with Central Vermont Public Service. He was known for his strong work-ethic, reliability, and willingness to help others. He also earned an associate degree from Champlain College while balancing work and family life.

Charlie devoted over 60 years as a volunteer firefighter in Rutland and Milton, rising to the rank of Lieutenant. In this role, he served his community with courage and a strong sense of responsibility. He was active in numerous organizations throughout his life, including the Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus, parish council, school board, Home Builders Association, American Legion, and the American Heart Association.

Chuck enjoyed hunting, reloading ammunition, music, and his faith. He sang in both the Aphasia Choir of Vermont and Our Lady of Grace Choir in Colchester. He loved big gatherings, and catching up with friends and neighbors. At family dinners, he was often the last to sit and eat, making sure everyone else had what they needed first. He was very proud of his large family, and of course, his homemade Italian meatballs.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Annie “Auree” Hurley; his children Laurie Hurley, Brendan Hurley and his wife Deanna, Tricia Gaudette and her husband Tracy, Deirdre LaFrance and her husband Scott, Tara Greenfield and her husband Bart, Shane Hurley, Patrick Hurley and his wife Danielle, Devin Hurley and his wife Melinda, Collin Hurley and his significant other Liz, and Caitlin Hurley.

He is also survived by his brother, Patrick J. Hurley Jr. and his wife Lucille; his beloved cousin Mary Angela Dalto; as well as his wife’s siblings and their significant others, Marilyn and Butch, Jim and Orawan, Jack and Lori, Erin and Vince, and Shannon. Additionally, he leaves behind many nieces and nephews, including Christopher, Luke, and Jarod Fountain, with whom he had a special relationship; numerous cousins, and countless friends.

Charlie was deeply proud of his grandchildren: Corey and his wife Delia, Danielle and her husband Jack, Casey, Brianna, and their mother Stephanie Hurley, Zeb, Oliver, Hunter, Cole, Dakota, Jayden, Kendra, Keira, Blake, Oaklynn, Ryker, Aidan, Sydney, Maxton, Killian, Whitney, Callie, Vivienne, Lydia, Trent, Grady, Charlie, Beaudin, Taylor, and Brynlee.
